Out of the Darkness Walk

On November 16, 2024, I, along with the International Legacy Association (ILA), participated in the Out of the Darkness Walk with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in Lakeland, FL. We came together to support our community in making a difference in preventing suicide and addressing mental health issues. Together, we brought hope, joy, and a sense of unity like never before. It was mind-blowing and heartbreaking to see so many people affected by this terrible epidemic, which knows no age, gender, or race. Everyone wants to feel loved and to know that someone cares.

This is a serious issue across America and witnessing the faces of those who have attempted suicide, as well as those who have lost loved ones, was painful. It truly hits home, as you never know what someone is going through. Sometimes, a simple smile, a hug, or even a small acknowledgment can make a significant difference and encourage someone to reconsider thoughts of suicide. A simple act of kindness can go a long way.

The International Legacy Association was there to represent and support those who have lost loved ones, providing strength, solace, and comfort to those impacted by suicide. ILA is dedicated to having resources available, giving back to the community, and ensuring that individuals receive the help they need. Our prayers go out to the families who have experienced loss and to those who are struggling. ILA serves as a conduit for anyone who may be contemplating suicide or facing mental health challenges.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention acknowledges the profound impact suicide and mental illness have on our lives and the lives of our loved ones, which is symbolized by the honor beads worn during the walk. Each color represents a personal connection to the cause and helps identify others who share similar experiences. We also blew bubbles to represent those who lost their life to suicide and had the option to wear different-colored beads to signify our connection. I wore blue and teal.

- Red: Loss of a spouse or partner

- Gold: Loss of a parent

- Orange: Loss of a sibling

- Purple: Loss of a relative or friend

- Silver: Loss of a first responder or military member

- Green: A personal struggle or attempt

- Teal: Supporting someone who struggles or has attempted

- Blue: Supporting suicide prevention

- Rainbow: Honoring the LGBTQ community

It was a beautiful sunny day for the walk, which spanned five miles around a gorgeous lake. Many people came out to support the cause and spread hope, joy, and love. Along the path, there were signs offering encouragement and inspiration. One sign read, "It takes courage to open up about your mental health and ask for help." Another stated, “Your life matters,” and it does, indeed. A further sign encouraged, “Be patient with yourself.” Many of the signs were also available in Spanish.

I am grateful to have participated in this walk to raise awareness in the community and to let everyone know that the International Legacy Association is here to help.
